I joined Thomas & Thomas in August 2024 after completing my Building Surveying degree from Ulster University in June 2024. I had previous work experience before joining Thomas & Thomas through my placement year in industry, whilst completing my degree, where I gained valuable building surveying experience in the commercial sector.

Learning through experience

Throughout my first year at Thomas & Thomas, I have been involved with a number of exciting jobs within the residential and commercial sectors such as residential roofing projects/external repair works, commercial fit-outs, dilapidations matters. I have gained valuable experience so far through the broad range of work that is available, including aspects of building surveying I had not previously been exposed to – such as planning applications and party wall. My day-to-day role within the company includes attending site visits, surveys and multiple other inspections required of a building surveyor, which allows me to explore London.

APC pathway and CPD

I’m currently working towards my APC with the support of some great mentors who guide me through the process and help me stay on top of my progress. Regular catch-ups with my supervisor make sure I’m keeping my diary up to date and focusing on the areas I can improve. I also take part in CPD sessions with other junior surveyors who are on the same journey towards chartership — it’s a great way to learn from each other and share experiences. On top of that, the company hosts formal CPD events that not only help build our knowledge but also give us the chance to meet others in the industry and grow our network.

After hours

It isn’t all work either; the team at Thomas & Thomas is very interactive, and there is always good humour in the office. Outside of the exciting site visits, the office environment is fun and vibrant and I get along well with the team. I have not only enjoyed many aspects of my work (and the unusual places I find myself), but there’s a great social element too. We often get together after work for a drink, team dinner or other activity. I can honestly say that I’m enjoying my time at Thomas & Thomas.
